The Department of Politics is offering 3 full-time research studentships and a further shared studentship with the School of Business Management.

Research studentships include payment of tuition fees (home OR overseas) for three years and an annual stipend at the relevant research council rate.
Holders of Queen Mary research studentships will receive teaching training and may be required to undertake a few hours of teaching. The research degrees begin in late September 2010.

One of the scholarships is specifically for students wanting to do research in the field of international relations, while the other two can be in any field of Politics (including International Relations).
The department has particular strengths in public policy, European politics, Western Balkans and former Yugoslavia, political theory, the comparative politics of developing countries (particularly in Latin America, the Middle East and South East Asia), nationalism , and political conflict.

In addition, the department is also offering a joint scholarship with the School of Business Management.
The joint studentship will be in the area of Politics, Communication and the New Economy. We welcome applications that intend to create new knowledge on the increasingly important overlap between politics and business: potential areas will include political communications and marketing, international political economy, and relations between the state and economy. The successful applicant will be jointly supervised by both departments.

Candidates will normally be expected to have a good first degree and a Masters degree in Politics or a related subject.
How to apply?

To be considered for the studentship applicants will need to provide the following by 12 February 2010:
A research proposal of 2000 words which should include a hypothesis, key questions to be addressed by your research, methodology and a bibliography.

What further training and professional preparation will you need to complete the doctorate and begin your career?

Please note that this document is in addition to the admissions application, research proposal, statement of purpose, curriculum vitae or other material mentioned above.

8. Higher education and beyond - Conference

The Department of Sociology of Education, University of Berne and the Department of Sociology, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (Switzerland) are holding an international conference in co-operation with the Centro Stefano Franscini (CSF).

Theme: This conference will focus on both the access to and the benefits of higher education for individuals and societies from a comparative perspective. Different higher education systems will be compared in terms of opportunities for access to higher education and its credentials. The conference is intended to identify ways to increase the number of university graduates and to take advantage of hitherto unused skill resources. It will also be aimed at the disclosure of policy measures to decrease educational inequalities in access to higher education. Another issue is the analysis of the consequences of political reforms of the higher education system on educational credentials (income, unemployment, etc.) from an economic and sociological perspective. The conference will focus particularly on the social mechanisms behind educational inequalities, the diversion of lower class students from university and differences in educational credentials. The main objectives of the conference are therefore linked to both sociological theory and social policy.

The conference will centre around three key issues to be addressed through proposed contributions:

(1) Inequalities regarding access to higher education.
(2) Credentials of higher education.
(3) Higher education and the economy.
(4) Methods of analysis of educational transitions/ selection problems.

Invited Speakers: Martin Abraham, Erszebet Bukodi, John Goldthorpe, Thomas Meyer, Walter Mueller, Heike Solga, Stefan Wolter.

Format: The conference will take place over one week (Sunday evening to Friday noon). Participant numbers are not intended to exceed 60. All papers will be presented in plenary sessions. On Wednesday there will be an excursion around Lago Maggiore.

Contributions: We invite social scientists to contribute to the conference with a plenary presentation about 20 to 25 minutes long. Papers should focus on one of the outlined topics regarding entrance to higher education and educational credentials. We would particularly like to invite papers that are based on longitudinal data (i.e. panel data or cumulated data) or contain cohort analyses. We would like to highlight the international character of this conference, and emphasise that papers from all over the world or cross-cultural comparisons are very welcome.

Papers: Participants should apply for the conference by submitting their papers. Your paper should cover key questions, theoretical issues, methods and some results. Please provide the following information for the author(s) who will attend the conference: family name, first name(s), email address, telephone and fax numbers (including country and area dialling codes), postal address (including postcode and country) and title/post/appointment. Please also indicate if the author is a PhD or postgraduate student.

The Deadline for handing in papers is 31 January 2010. You will be informed whether your paper has been accepted or not by 28 February 2010.

Grants and Subsidies: All participants will receive a subsidy of CHF 50 per night for conference accommodation at the Hotel Monte Verita. There will also be subsidies for travel expenses for all participants as well as grants for doctoral candidates. Please note that eligibility for financial support depends on attendance at the entire conference from Sunday night to Friday noon.

Venue: The conference will take place at the Monte Verita Conference Centre close to Lago Maggiore in Switzerland. All participants are invited to stay at the Hotel Monte Verita.

To guarantee your place we advise you to book flights and accommodation early.

Organisers:

Rolf Becker (University of Berne)
Andreas Diekmann (ETH Zurich)
Andreas Hadjar (University of Berne)
Ben Jann (ETH Zurich)

Please send your papers, with an estimate of travel expenses, to Andreas Hadjar, who will be happy to answer your questions.

Overview

The Diplomatic Academy Vienna (www.da-vienna.ac.at) in partnership with the Center for Global Communication Studies (www.asc.upenn.edu) at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania will host a conference from March 16 – 18, 2010 in Vienna, Austria, organized by the American Austrian Foundation (www.aaf-online.org). The conference will bring together a diverse group of individuals representing multiple perspectives and nationalities. Panelists include distinguished print and television journalists, bloggers and social media specialists, NGO actors involved in media outreach, academics, and diplomats.

The conference is organized around the theme: New Media, New Newsmakers, New Diplomacy: The Changing Role of Journalists, NGOs, and Diplomats in a Multi-modal Media World. The purpose of the conference is two-fold: (1) to identify the changing role of NGOs, journalists, and diplomats in shaping the international media agenda, and (2) to bring together students, scholars and practitioners from around the world to participate in seminars and break out sessions designed to identify current problems and possible solutions to the challenges raised by this changing communications environment.

The conference organizers have launched an essay competition to identify motivated and thoughtful students of international relations, development studies, communication, journalism, law, and related fields who will enrich the conference proceedings. Seven winning essay writers will win a stipend of up to $1500 each to attend the 2010 Milton Wolf Seminar in Vienna. The full conference agenda can be found on the AAF, CGCS and the Diplomatic Academy Websites.

Particularly in recent years, NGOs have taken on new functions as information intermediaries, working in cooperation with, or even in the stead of, traditional news organizations. How do NGO media strategies affect journalistic and diplomatic practices? What are the principal consequences of this trend for diplomacy and international relations? 2010 Milton Wolf Essay Contest Page 2

Some further guidance

Successful essays should demonstrate originality, cogently address the different debates and perspectives on the issue, and incorporate particular examples that demonstrate strengths and weaknesses of NGOs as news entities.

Before formulating your entry, you may want to read the NGOs and the News Initiative article series for an overview of different ethical and methodological debates

and for specific examples of NGO news making activities.

17. Deutscher Filmclub in Dnipropetrovsk, 21.01.10

Liebe Studierende,

wann? Donnerstag, 21.01.10
wo? Ukrainisch-Deutsches Zentrum in der Bergbauuniversität
Gebäude 10, Raum 307
Karl-Marx-Prospekt 19 (Dnipropetrovsk)

was?
